Technical Talk on ‘Sensorless Control of Electrical Drivers’

IEEE GRIET SB administered a Technical Talk on ‘Sensorless Control of Electrical Drives’
on 29 March 2022. The event was graced by Dr Gopinath G R, Assistant Professor in the
Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at Mahindra.

IEEE IAS SB Chair – Ms Saniya gave a rundown on present technology used in EVs, followed by Dr B. Phaneendra Babu, Professor, Head, Dept. of EEE courteously addressed the event.

Then our honourable Chief Guest Dr. Gopinath G R exquisitely introduced modelling, control and sensor less techniques, and extended Kalman Filter Observer.
Furthermore, he explained about
the characteristics and different types of permanent magnet synchronous motor and their purposes of internal and external mounted PMSM along with the factors affecting their efficiency. A detailed description of the factors and constants in modelling PMSM of stator and rotor was given.

An explanation on Inductance in stationary alpha beta reference frame, Coordinate transformations in power non invariant and mechanical modeling, The speed control characteristics at different frequency, How torque and power will vary and Efficiency map of Toyota Prius motor were stated.

A brief elucidation about control strategies for PMSM and vector control of IPMSM in rotor reference frame, speed control design, and estimation technique were established. After a session of answering questions posed by the students, the event culminated with a vote of thanks given by IEEE IAS SB Vyshanavi.

Inauguration of New Chapters

IEEE believes in advancing technology for Humanity. The IEEE GRIET SB has been propagating this for a long time and this time they have introduced three new chapters to achieve this. CAS, ISE, and CIS – namely the three new chapters introduced along with the existing five chapters of IEEE GRIET SB making it a total of 8 chapters. The inauguration of these new chapters was done on 8th April 2022 ECE Seminar Hall GRIET.

We had many guests to grace the occasion and share their experiences and the guests were Sreenivas Jasti (IEEE Chair), Dr.JVR Ravindra (Vice-Chair of IES chapter), Dr A.Kavitha (Chair of CIS Chapter), Sai Prasanth (Member of SAC IEEE), Pranay Kashyap (IEEE IES Member), Dr.T.Hima Bindu (IEEE IES Member) belonging to IEEE Hyderabad section respectively and Ranjith Pohanekar (HOD, Services and Sales, HPS).

The event started at 10:00 A.M with a prayer song from Deepika Balla followed by lighting the lamp by Dr. Hima Bindu and a classical Dance Performance By Harshitha. Later the guests were invited onto the dais and each of them was presented with a plant to mark the importance of nature.

Dr.J.Praveen, the Principal of GRIET addressed the gathering and gave insightful information about IEEE GRIET SB. Later Dr. Srinivas Jasti spoke about the opportunities offered by IEEE and the path that one must follow to achieve success. Mr. Ranjith Pohenkar spoke about his college days and his beginnings towards success and his speech has braced everyone with new energy. Dr. JVR Ravindra, the Principal of Vardhaman College of Engineering gave great insight into the skills that can be developed by IEEE and also about the opportunities it opens up for students, his speech also made many realize the importance of IEEE in modern-day life.

Dr.A. Kavitha, the chair of the CIS chapter IEEE Hyderabad Section, spoke about the implications and benefits of CIS on IEEE. Her speech made everyone realize how big CIS is important in IEEE. She showed how each chapter is different and vital for both IEEE and the society. Mr. Sai Prasanth took a different approach with an interactive session and made the audience think about IEEE in a whole different way.

All the guests launched the logos of CAS, IES, and CIS. It was an enthusiastic moment for the whole IEEE core committee. The chairs of each chapter addressed the crowd about the objectives for the coming academic year. The director of GRIET, Dr. Jandhyala N Murthy thanked everyone who could attend the inauguration and spoke a few words about student life. His speech was short and clear, but it had reached and made an impact on everyone present in the auditorium. The guests were presented with a token of appreciation by the Principal and Director of GRIET. All the chairs of the new chapters requested the guests to give their autographs on the logos. Dr. B. Phaneendra Babu (COUNSELOR OF IEEE GRIET SB) was asked to give a warm vote of thanks which was followed by the national anthem.

Digital Image Security

IEEE GRIET SB conducted a webinar on “Digital Image Security by Watermarking” under Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society on 10th March 2022 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM via Google meet.

Information can be duplicated easily nowadays due to the digital communication of multimedia data. Providing authorized data and protecting private information from unauthorized use is a highly difficult and complex process. Using the watermarking technique, only the authorized user can use the data.

Digital Watermarkingis the use of a marker covertly embedded in digital media such as audio, video or image which enables one to know the source or owner of the copyright. This technique is used for tracing copyright infringement on social media and knowing the genuineness of the notes in the banking system. Watermarking is a very secure technique.

The speaker for the webinar is Dr. Ayesha Shaikh, Researcher, Assistant Professor (Senior Grade) in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) – Chennai campus. Dr. Ayesha began the online session by discussing how the images could be pirated followed by the different ways information can be pirated like illegal duplication, data tampering etc and the various ways to protect the data.

Using a PowerPoint Presentation, she illustrated the different ways a digital image can be protected so that only the authorized user has access to it. The speaker then discussed image security and the need for it. She spoke about the many ways in which it could be protected like cryptography, steganography etc.

She also spoke about the two ways of watermarking namely visible watermarking and invisible watermarking. She also discussed the algorithms for both visible and invisible watermarking in MATLAB followed by the extraction of watermarks. She also added that attacks could be done on watermarked images too and that could be either inadvertent or intentional. The webinar concluded with a Q&A session where students cleared their doubts they had on image security, attacks on watermarking and the need for watermarking. The session was engaging and very interactive. Students were very enthusiastic to participate and learn about how digital security on the image is done by watermarking.
